Abbas Kiarostami's 1987 film "Where Is the Friend's House?" centers on a young 8-year-old boy searching for his schoolmate's house in order to return a notebook. The plot sounds relatively simple enough, and yet it somehow manages to pull you along this journey through Iran's small-town villages in a desperate search. The adults in the film surround our young protagonist don't really perceive him and if they do, chastise him rather than assist him. In this desperate attempt to save his friend from being expelled from school, not a lot of people really seem helpful. Through this narrative, a meandering observation of Iran's small-town modern life unfolds before the viewer, offering a complex look at the philosophies and anxieties of a modern people and how the youth are being brought up in this landscape.
