The Two of Us (1967)

RANKED:

1. The Two of Us (1967)

Claude Berri's directorial debut, 1967's "The Two of Us," centers on a an 8-year-old Jewish boy hiding his identity in Nazi-occupied France by staying with an elderly antisemitic couple. Berri's film feels like a throwback to the 'tradition of quality' from the classic age of French cinema. However, this throwback quality reconciles with generations past, reminiscing on them nostalgically - through the eyes of a child. The complications between the ideology creates the drama of the story and the lack of resolution makes the film feel akin to its modern contemporaries. "The Two of Us" also happens to be one of Michel Simon's last great performances.
