RANKED:
1. Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Adapting the classic 1813 Jane Austen novel "Pride and Prejudice" into an enduring and lasting film is no small feat, but filmmaker Joe Wright managed to do just that. Starring Keira Knightley as the headstrong Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew MacFayden as the indelible Mr. Darcy, the 2005 adaptation of Austen's novel is perhaps the most iconic rendition thus far. Every viewing of the film only reveals more, as the subtleties in dialogue, the glances of faces, and the wringing of hands become more revealing towards the true drama of the story. While also being an utterly romantic depiction, the film also languishes in its comedic elements, perhaps only through the wittiness of its measured dialogue. Through the subtleties and restraint of every line and glance, the themes begin to emerge: that being the restrictions placed upon the individual in a society hindered by economic status. The film has only grown in praise over the decades, as an entire generation continues to re-watch time and time again.
